A Onondaga County assembly plant could become the American manufacturer for automobiles developed by the Reva Electric Car Company of India -- ultimately creating up to 250 jobs -- if a financing package including government loans and grants is completed, according to the Syracuse Post Standard.
The new car, the three-door NXR hatchback, was unveiled last month at an international auto show in Frankfurt, Germany, according to the paper, which reported that the NXR model is considered a marketable electric vehicle because it can reach speeds up to 65 mph with a range of 100 miles on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack.
Reva was established in 1994 as a joint venture between the Maini Group of India and AEV LLC, a California company, to manufacture environmentally friendly and cost-effective electric vehicles. The technology was developed in California and the cars are now sold in Asia and Europe.
The Metropolitan Development Association of Syracuse and Central New York has been working for about a year to put the deal together with state and Federal officials, the report said.
