A commission created by Binghamton's Mayor Matthew T. Ryan and the city council under their "Partnerships for Change Initiative" has issued a comprehensive, 76-page report that seeks to move the city toward sustainable development by encouraging more mixed-use areas and increased adaptive re-use of existing buildings.
The Commission on Sustainable Development and Smart Growth was one of four Commissions created under the partnerships initiative that have proposed "green" ideas for the city's future.
The report recommends: Taking steps to reduce the city's contribution to climate change; Encouraging the preservation, renovation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings and promoting green building practices; Encouraging construction and demolition recycling; Promoting economic development in ways that "produce livable jobs, strengthen low and moderate-income communities, and protect the natural environment."
