Beacon embraces Smart Growth with proposal for Transit Oriented Development near train station

|

The city council in Beacon will hold a public hearing September 8 to obtain comments on a proposed transit-oriented development zone on land near the Metro-North Railroad station that is currently zoned for waterfront activities, business and light industry.

Beacon Mayor Steve Gold told the Poughkeepsie Journal that his Dutchess County city must find more sustainable ways to balance its future budgets than through escalating property taxes, adding "One way to stabilize revenue is to add to our residential housing stock using smart growth principals."

The higher-density developments being considered at the station and along the nearby Fishkill Creek will represent a lower cost of providing services than similar developments of single-family homes, according to the Mayor. "That is why these developments are recommended by the comprehensive plan," he said.
