NYTimes columnist captures Anti-Sprawl essence

|

David Brooks, the New York Times and syndicated columnist who is a regular guest on The News Hour on PBS, recently captured the essence of the Anti-Sprawl argument in an insightful commentary about the stimulus spending plans of the new Administration heading to Washington

Among other startling statistics about America's very mobile inhabitants, he reports that the population of metropolitan Pittsburgh declined by eight percent in the 1980's and 90's, but the developed land in the Pittsburgh area sprawled outward by 43 percent (does this sound familiar when considering many Upstate New York situations?)

Mr. Brooks opines: "It would be great if Obama's spending, instead of just dissolving into the maw of construction, would actually encourage the clustering and leave a legacy that would be visible and beloved 50 years from now."
