Will Local Police Merger Blaze a Trail for the Future?

|

In Central New York, Clay Town Supervisor Jim Rowley is thought to have gained a good deal of credibility both locally and statewide for his leadership in proposing the successful merger of the Clay Town Police with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department. Observers report that local residents have been following the issue closely and most are said to support what transpired in Clay, especially given how quickly and seamlessly the rare but significant  public services merger took place.

The Post Standard in Syracuse has published extensive reporting about the issue, and consolidation supporters are sure to tout the merger as an indication of what can happen with enlightened local political leadership that has the courage to propose needed changes -- however supposedly unpopular they may be.

The multitude of municipal subdivisions and special districts among New York's local government have long been targeted for reduction through consolidation by good government groups and watchdogs, along with a (very) few elected officials.
